Before You Start: Requirements Checklist
You'll Need:
- [ ] ASIC miner (this guide uses Antminer S21 as example)
- [ ] Appropriate power supply (often included)
- [ ] Power cables (C13/C14 for most miners)
- [ ] Ethernet cable (Cat5e or better)
- [ ] Router with available LAN port
- [ ] Computer on the same network
- [ ] Mining pool account (create one first)
- [ ] Bitcoin wallet address for payouts
Step 1: Verify Your Electrical Setup
Before plugging anything in, ensure your electrical infrastructure can handle the miner.
Typical ASIC Power Requirements
| Miner | Power Draw | Circuit Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Antminer S21 | 3,500W | 240V / 15A dedicated |
| Antminer S21 Pro | 3,510W | 240V / 15A dedicated |
| WhatsMiner M66S | 5,500W | 240V / 25A dedicated |
| S21 XP Hydro | 5,676W | 240V / 25A dedicated |
Safety Warning
Never run an ASIC on a shared circuit or power board. These devices draw significant sustained power and can cause fires if electrical infrastructure is inadequate. When in doubt, have an electrician install a dedicated circuit.
Step 2: Prepare the Location
ASIC miners are loud (75+ dB) and produce significant heat (3-5kW). Choose your location carefully:
- Ventilation - The miner needs airflow. Fans pull air in one side and exhaust hot air the other. Never block either end.
- Temperature - Operating range is typically 5-40C. Australian summers may require additional cooling.
- Noise - Suitable locations: garage, shed, warehouse. Unsuitable: bedroom, living room, apartment.
- Dust - Keep the area clean. Dust accumulation reduces efficiency and can damage components.
Step 3: Physical Setup
3.1 Unbox and Inspect
Check for shipping damage. Inspect fans, hash boards, and connectors. Document any issues before powering on.
3.2 Position the Miner
Place on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Ensure at least 30cm clearance on intake and exhaust sides for airflow.
3.3 Connect Power
Connect power cables from PSU to miner (typically 4-6 connections). Connect PSU to wall outlet. Do not power on yet.
3.4 Connect Network
Plug ethernet cable from miner to your router. ASIC miners require wired connections - WiFi is not supported on most models.
Step 4: Power On and Find the IP Address
4.1 Power On
Switch on the power supply. The miner will boot up - fans will spin to full speed initially, then settle. Boot takes 1-3 minutes.
4.2 Find the Miner's IP Address
Your miner gets an IP address from your router via DHCP. Find it using one of these methods:
Method A: Router Admin Page
- Access your router (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
- Look for "Connected Devices" or "DHCP Client List"
- Find the device named "Antminer" or similar
- Note the IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.105)
Method B: IP Scanner
- Download an IP scanner (e.g., Angry IP Scanner, Advanced IP Scanner)
- Scan your local network range (e.g., 192.168.1.1-254)
- Look for new devices or "Antminer" in the hostname
Method C: Bitmain IP Reporter (Antminer only)
- Download Bitmain's IP Reporter tool
- Hold the miner's IP Report button for 5 seconds
- The tool will display the miner's IP address
Step 5: Access the Web Interface
5.1 Open the Miner's Page
Enter the miner's IP address in your web browser (e.g., http://192.168.1.105)
5.2 Log In
Default credentials for most Antminers:
- Username: root
- Password: root
For other manufacturers, check the manual. WhatsMiner often uses admin/admin.
5.3 Change the Default Password
Immediately change the default password in Settings > Password. Use a strong, unique password.
Step 6: Configure Pool Settings
This is where you tell the miner where to send its work. Navigate to Miner Configuration or Pool Settings.
6.1 Get Your Pool Information
From your mining pool dashboard, you'll need:
- Pool URL - e.g., stratum+tcp://stratum.braiins.com:3333
- Worker Name - e.g., username.worker1
- Password - Often just "x" or your actual password
6.2 Enter Pool Settings
Most miners have 3 pool slots. Configure them in priority order:
URL: stratum+tcp://stratum.braiins.com:3333
Worker: yourusername.worker1
Password: x
URL: stratum+tcp://sg.stratum.slushpool.com:3333
Worker: yourusername.worker1
Password: x
URL: stratum+tcp://stratum.antpool.com:3333
Worker: yourusername.worker1
Password: x
6.3 Save and Apply
Click Save/Apply. The miner will restart mining with the new settings. This takes 1-2 minutes.
Step 7: Verify Mining is Working
7.1 Check the Miner Dashboard
In the miner's web interface, look for:
- Hashrate - Should match or be close to rated specs (e.g., ~234 TH/s for S21 Pro)
- Temperature - Should be below 75C for chips, below 50C for boards
- Fan Speed - Will vary with temperature (typically 40-80%)
- Pool Status - Should show "Connected" or similar
7.2 Check the Pool Dashboard
Log into your mining pool account. After 5-10 minutes, you should see:
- Your worker listed as "Online"
- Hashrate appearing (may take 10-30 min to stabilize)
- Shares being accepted
Success!
If you see hashrate on your pool dashboard and accepted shares increasing, congratulations - you're mining Bitcoin!
Troubleshooting Common Issues
"No hashrate showing"
- Wait 10-30 minutes for hashrate to stabilize
- Check pool URL is correct (including stratum+tcp://)
- Verify worker name matches your pool account exactly
- Try a different pool to isolate the issue
"High temperature warnings"
- Improve ventilation - ensure airflow isn't blocked
- Reduce ambient temperature
- Clean dust from intake/exhaust
- Check fans are working properly
"Can't find miner's IP"
- Verify ethernet cable is connected properly
- Try a different ethernet cable
- Check router has available DHCP addresses
- Use the IP Reporter button if available
Next Steps
Now that your miner is running:
- Set up a monitoring schedule (check temps daily initially)
- Configure pool payout threshold and wallet address
- Consider firmware updates for better efficiency
- Learn about underclocking/overclocking options
- Keep records for tax purposes
